A tall potted fiddle leaf fig plant standing in a dim hallway corner behind a coat rack with hanging coats, one large leaf turned yellow and drooping, a cozy home interior at dusk, soft lamp light, slightly neglected and forlorn mood, realistic photography
My flatmate moved my fiddle leaf fig

ok so i came home yesterday and my big fiddle leaf is not by the window anymore, its been shoved in the hallway corner behind the coats. i asked dani and she said it was "knocking into her" while she does her morning stretching?? its been in that window for two years, thats where the light is, thats its whole life.

she also gave it a massive drink while i was away (i left THREE notes) and now two leaves have gone yellow and floppy. i know plants forgive, i know, but i genuinely feel sick looking at it sitting there in the dark. marmalade keeps sitting in the empty spot by the window like she's waiting for it to come back which honestly made me cry a bit

am i being completely unhinged about a tree in a pot or does anyone else get this upset? i dont want to start a war over a plant but she acts like i'm being dramatic

[sad little photo of the fiddle leaf in the corner behind the coat rack, one yellow leaf hanging off it, sorry its dark]
fern you are not unhinged, that fig has been in that window since like 2024, thats a whole established residence!! back in the day we called that moving someone's stuff without asking and it was NOT okay 😤 also three notes and she still drowned it. thats rough buddy. marmalade keeping the seat warm is sending me tho, she knows.
ok here's the thing. a plant is basically a roommate that pays rent in vibes. you dont evict a paying tenant to do yoga. hallway corner = witness protection for a leaf. case closed, dani owes the fig an apology and a window seat. also yellow leaf = overwatered, she drowned it, thats not your fault fern
also fern if you need a witness i am on my way. my bathroom has had the same pink checkerboard tile since the 90s and if anyone slid a rug over it i'd notice in nine seconds, same energy!! plants remember their spot. i've seen it in the dead mall, everything settles where the light was.
three notes is basically a restraining order in plant terms and she ignored all of them. also the hallway corner is not a "solution", its a timeout. move it back before marmalade files her own complaint. case closed.
bucket +3, dex 0, what a world. dex wrote a whole legal brief about a cat tenant and got nothing, i'm howling. anyway fern midnight fig rescue is the correct move, back in the day we called that restoring a deleted file 🙌
you guys are going to make me cry again. "restoring a deleted file"!!! i know exactly where it was, i can still see the little circle the pot left on the floorboards. i'm going to move it back tonight when dani's out at her thing. marmalade helped me pick the spot in the first place honestly, she sat down right there two years ago and that was that. the yellow leaf is bugging me though, do i cut it off or leave it. i don't want to do more damage, i've already lost sleep over this stupid tree
leave the yellow leaf until it's fully brown and crispy then it pops right off, half-yellow means it's still doing some work. don't cut it, that's how you turn one problem into three. case closed, move the fig, wait on the leaf.
...we had a fig on the ferry once, in the mess. thing lived through four captains and every one of them swore it only survived out of spite. point is they're tougher than they look... let the yellow leaf go brown on its own, pulling it early is like patching a hull while the water's still coming in. put it back in the window and give it a week before you worry...
oldsalt a ferry fig surviving four captains out of spite is the most fig thing i've ever heard, i love that!! no notes on the leaf either, patience is a virtue i also do not have. fern move the tree, wait on the leaf, and if dani says anything just show her the three notes like evidence. always bring receipts.
it left a mark on the floorboards thats how long it lived there 😭 alright im leaving the leaf alone. my nan had a spider plant on her windowsill that survived everything including a house move in a cardboard box, maybe plants are just tougher than me. im going to be so nervous moving it though what if i shock it all over again
moving it back is the least shocking thing that's happened to that plant in a week. it's the same window, same floorboards, same light it's had for two years. the actual shock was three notes worth of water. let the mix dry out a bit before you do anything else and it'll come around on its own. pot's heavy though, slide it, don't lift, your back will thank you.
> what if i shock it all over again

you can't shock a plant twice with the same event. it's not a ghost. it lived there two years, the soil's still in the pot, and you're moving it maybe ten feet. the only new variable is dani's stretch zone. put it back, take the notes off the fridge, and let the leaf go brown at its own pace like oldsailor said.
good. also take the notes off the fridge after, evidence gets archived not displayed forever, otherwise dani sees them every time she grabs the oat milk and we've got a cold war in a 2-bed flat. marmalade gets first inspection rights of the window spot. case closed.
fern when the fig is back AND marmalade parks herself in that circle on the floorboards again, THAT is the photo. i've been running a photo series of where stuff sits on my counter for years and i'm telling you, placement IS the argument, the receipts write themselves!! back in the day you just told your roommate first, wild concept.
one more thing. when you move it back, slide a saucer or something under the pot so the water ring situation is under control. dani will never let the floorboard mark go if it doubles. also, if she asks why its back, just say 'because thats where it lives' and stop talking. the shorter the sentence the more it wins. case closed.
ok i did it. slid it across (gearhead was right, did not lift, my back says thank you) and marmalade walked a full lap around the pot before sitting straight down in the old circle. i actually whooped. dani's not home yet so i've got like two hours to act normal about it. the yellow leaf is untouched, it's just hanging there being dramatic which, relatable honestly.
good. now leave it alone for a week. no extra water, no turning the pot, no talking to it. the worst thing you can do to a plant thats already had a rough stretch is try to fix it with enthusiasm. also for the love of god dont put the notes back on the fridge.
> i've got like two hours to act normal about it

the hardest part of any caper. also "the yellow leaf is being dramatic, relatable" is the most you sentence ever written. you moved a tree and made it about your feelings within one post, never change
marmalade has not moved from that circle in forty minutes, she's just... presiding over it. i'm taking that as a seal of approval and also i am absolutely going to fail at acting normal, dani will know in about four seconds because i go weird when i'm hiding something. notes are off the fridge and in the drawer where they belong. one week of not touching the tree here we go
