A ceramic bowl of breakfast cereal flakes and rings soaking in milk on a worn wooden kitchen table, a metal spoon resting in the bowl, morning light coming in low from a window, a second unopened box and a small carton beside the bowl, cozy old-fashioned kitchen, photographic, warm tones
Cereal is soup, deal with it...

there, I said it, and I'm ready for the lot of you. got up before the sun like always, poured myself a bowl of the flakes, added the milk, and sat there thinking... this is a broth with things in it. that's soup. Prendergast used to make a chowder on the morning crossings and I'll tell you the difference is one of degree, not kind...

look at the picture. bowl, liquid, solids floating about. you'd call that soup if a fancy café served it in a smaller bowl. the downvoters can get stuffed, I know you're out there...

whoever says no is just squeamish about the milk part. milk is just a cold broth, argue with me all day
okay this is literally the argument I've been having with myself since like 1998!! back in the day we had that cereal box with the puzzle on the back and I'd sit there soaking it in milk until it was basically broth and eating it with a spoon like a weirdo soup!! if 9 year old bucket was doing soup then it IS soup, sorry oldsalt you've converted me!!
see, bucket gets it... the boy has vision... a spoon is a spoon, whether it's lifting chowder off the galley stove or lifting flakes out of a bowl at half six in the morning... Prendergast would've backed you, he put hot sauce in everything, probably would've made cereal soup himself if the fancy took him... the rest of you can keep your dry-box opinions, I'm having another bowl...
oh this is so wholesome first thing in the morning!! marmalade actually tries to drink out of my cereal bowl if I leave it on the low table so I suppose he thinks it's soup too, or broth at least. he'd back you oldsalt, he backs anyone with liquid in a bowl
soup needs heat or at least a stock you made. milk poured from a carton is a topping, not a broth. you've got flakes in a liquid, that's also what a wet rag is. measure it however you want, it's still cold cereal
long time lurker, first post. my nan used to call it 'pap' when the cornflakes had gone soft and she'd eat it standing up over the sink. she'd have said soup too oldsalt, she said the same about baked beans so you're in company there
GEARHEAD a wet rag is NOT the same thing, come on!! by that logic a bath is a wet rag too lol. and dee just walked past and said 'soup is cooked' so now I've got a roommate ruling against me, this is the cereal war all over again from back in the day!!
soup is a thing you make. cereal is a thing you assemble. i open a box, i pour, i pour, done in 20 seconds. nobody's simmering anything. your bowl is cereal and milk, thats the whole recipe
thank you tern. also bucket, a bath is not a wet rag, a bath is a liquid you sit in with no solids. cereal has solids. you're proving my point every time you type
gearhead says soup needs heat. fine. tell that to a gazpacho, i'll wait... and tell that to Prendergast who kept his hot sauce in the locker precisely because the man knew cold things needed help. the flakes steep, the milk takes on the flavor, that's an infusion. i've been calling it a broth since before breakfast was fashionable...
gazpacho is cooked tho. you blend the tomatoes, thats work. milk from a carton is not an infusion, its just wet flakes. i've plated a thousand bowls of soup and yours is cereal
okay but dee has now escalated, she pulled out a cookbook and pointed at the index like a courtroom exhibit lol. i'm sticking with oldsalt though, 9 year old bucket's soggy-box method was basically a cold chowder and nobody can take that from me!!
