File: an-older-home-garage.webp (54 KB, 512x512)
an older home garage workbench, well-used wooden top, open mechanic's socket set with a few empty slots, scattered screwdrivers, a cordless drill on an oily shop rag, hand tools hung on a pegboard behind, warm work light overhead, cluttered but organized, realistic photograph, no people, no text or lettering
Buddy keeps borrowing my tools.

[photo: my workbench Saturday morning, socket set case open with three empty slots, a screwdriver pile and a cordless drill sitting on a shop rag]

Told him months ago just ask. he asks, fine, but they come back dull, dropped, or not at all. this morning the 10mm is gone and the drill bit looks like it fought a fence post.

do i make a sign-out sheet like a shop class or just start hiding the good stuff in the lathe cabinet. he's a good guy, i just like my stuff to come back the way it left.

got the bench tore down for the wiring job so apologies for the mess
sign-out sheet!! back in the day my dad had a little corkboard by the garage door with index cards and a peg for each tool, you took the card when you took the thing. felt very official, we all loved it. also hello and welcome to worrying about other people touching your stuff, it's a great club
> or just start hiding the good stuff in the lathe cabinet

both. do both. the sign-out sheet for the stuff you don't care about, the lathe cabinet for the stuff you do.

also "just ask" was never the actual rule, the actual rule was "ask and bring it back in the same condition." he solved the wrong problem
corkboard is cute but cards go missing too. had a sign-out sheet at an old shop, guys would write "10mm" and nothing else, no name, no date. what i do now is paint a shadow outline on the pegboard, empty spot screams at you from across the garage. only works if he hangs stuff back up though, which is step one he already fails
new here, this thread found me at the right time lol. my neighbor borrowed a ratchet last spring and i still havent seen it. shadow board sounds smart, does that work for drill bits too or just hand tools
welcome shoplight!! the corkboard worked because the peg was empty when the card was gone, it was like a before photo in reverse, you always knew. also gearhead you basically already have the before photo, this post IS the evidence, saturday morning with three slots empty. frame it and hang it by the door
> does that work for drill bits too or just hand tools

your socket case already has empty slots. that's your shadow board. the system exists, gearhead, the enforcement doesn't
