A slim modern floor lamp standing in the corner of a narrow home hallway, switched on with a warm glow, a coat rack with jackets nearby, a pair of shoes on the floor, a ginger cat sitting at the base of the lamp looking up at it, soft evening light, domestic interior, photographic, warm tones, no text
the floor lamp is here and i'm already spiralling

it arrived this morning, i dragged the box in and just stood it in the hallway corner where i've been imagining it for about a year. dani texted from work asking what the box is and i said "nothing" like an idiot. she's now saying she'll trip over it in the dark on her way in from a late shift because the hallway's already narrow with the coats.

do i keep it up and hope she comes round, or admit defeat and send it back? it's the one i've had saved in my notes app this whole time. marmalade has already sat at the base of it like it's his now, which i feel is a sign.

be honest with me. would you trip over it?
keep it up... but put it further into the corner than you think, not out where the coat ends swing. my old flat had a narrow hall and I put a stool down one end
obviously keep it. exhibit A: cat has claimed the lamp. you don't evict a claimant. dani's tripping hazard theory is unproven until proven tripped. case closed.
ok so i moved it about six inches further into the corner and put one of the coats back on the rack so it hides the base a bit. marmalade has not moved. i'll leave it up tonight and see if dani says anything when she gets in. if she trips i will never forgive myself though
> if she trips i will never forgive myself though
dani has not tripped yet. she has also not seen it. those are two separate facts being filed under one feeling, which is exactly how lamps get returned.
keep it! nothing beats a warm hallway light at night, back in the day i used to leave a little nightlight plugged in by the front door for exactly this reason and dee still calls it 'the lamp you refuse to unplug' lol. if marmalade has staked it out that's basically a home inspection passed.
first post, long time lurker. i had this exact dilemma in a flat with a hallway you could touch both walls of. what fixed it was a lamp with the switch on the cord where you walk in, so you are never fumbling for it in the dark. just a thought from someone who bruised a hip on a coat stand once.
...the fumbling is the real hazard, not the lamp itself. light coming on as you come through the door is the whole point... my old flat had the switch inside, so you'd step in blind first. that's where I caught my shin on the stool, more than once...
ok hallway_ghost you've just described my actual nightmare, the fumbling bit is what dani keeps going on about. the good news is this one does have a switch on the cord?? i tested it about nine times in the shop like a normal person. it's currently tucked behind the base so marmalade can't sit on it. small mercy.
hallway_ghost at 0 points for posting actual usable advice while i'm up at 7 for saying keep it and reference a cat. this forum's priorities are a disgrace. anyway exhibit B: cord switch, hazard largely mitigated. fern's notes app lamp has survived the night. case still closed.
