File: a-bright-apartment-windowsill.webp (21 KB, 512x512)
A bright apartment windowsill in a kitchen, a large calathea plant in a terracotta pot sitting slightly off centre, strong late afternoon sunlight falling across the sill and casting a hard shadow of the leaves onto the counter, a kitchen cloth and a mug nearby, warm domestic tones, soft focus on the background cupboards, photograph, no text
dani moved my plant again. came home last night and the big calathea is not on the shelf above the shoe rack where it has lived for weeks, it's now on the kitchen windowsill and honestly the light there is quite harsh in the afternoon and i stood in the hallway with my coat still on feeling silly about how upset i was. she says the hallway is too dim for it and she's probably right and that's what's annoying me most. do i just move it back quietly like the toilet roll thing or do i say something and risk being the plant weirdo again. also marmalade can reach the windowsill much easier so now i'm on cat watch. help
windowsill in direct afternoon sun is worse than a dim hallway for a calathea, sorry. terracotta plus hot glass = baked roots, that's not opinion that's just thermodynamics. put it back but shift it a foot off the glass or throw a sheer curtain up, and the cat thing is real, marmalade will treat that sill like a runway. say something to dani, you're not being weird you're correcting a downgrade.
oh this is a case file and a half! back in the day my roommate used to move my stuff and I'd just move it back and we'd both pretend it never happened lol. agree with gearhead about the light though, the shadow in your photo looks HARD, that's not gentle plant light. maybe keep it on the sill but a bit further from the glass so dani can see it and you can sleep at night?
the hard shadow is what got me honestly, the photo doesn't even do it justice, it was like a stencil on the counter. i moved it a foot off the glass last night while dani was out and marmalade immediately sat in the exact spot it had been. cats know. they always know.
a foot off the glass solves about 80% of it. the other 20% is telling dani before she 'tidies' it again next week. you're not being the plant weirdo, you'd just be saying 'hey that's the wrong spot' which is a normal sentence adults say.
okay i'll say something tonight then, keeping it low key like bucket says. the weird part is she was probably trying to be nice about it? she knows the hallway light is bad, that's why she moved it. so she'll probably just say oh right fine and move it back and i'll feel like i made a whole thing out of a plant. which i did. i made a whole thing out of a plant.
you made a whole thing out of a plant because the plant is in a worse spot now. that's allowed. also if she was being nice about it she'll be fine with being told it's wrong, people don't get defensive over a nice gesture they can undo in ten seconds. worst case you both move the pot together and it's settled. put a photo up after so we can check the shadow situation.
sounds like one of them cabin arguments... we had a lad on board who kept rearranging the kettle and swearing the other lot did it. end of the week we all knew it was him. anyway the sun thing, I had a geranium on my sill for years and if I left it pressed to the glass the leaves went pale and limp by july... move it back fern, dani will survive...
a lad who kept rearranging the kettle is going to live in my head. i did keep it low key by the way, just said 'oh i put it a bit further in, the glass was cooking it' and she went 'ah yeah fair' and that was that. ten seconds. why do i build these things up for days.
correction: you moved the pot and now the sill belongs to marmalade. That's the real story. Case closed, cat won.
Dex has a point lol, you've essentially relocated the plant into cat territory! also fern PLEASE photograph the new shadow situation like gearhead said, hard afternoon shadows on a windowsill are peak domestic photography, back in the day my whole 2003 aesthetic was exactly this photo and I love it!
i will take the photo tonight if the light's still doing the stencil thing. and yeah the sill is basically marmalade's now, he's already had a stretch up there twice today like he's inspecting my work. dani didn't move it back though so i'm calling the whole thing a win.
first time posting here, just lurking and this one got me. my flatmate and i had a standing cold war over a lamp for about four months, neither of us would move it back we'd just shift it two inches when the other wasn't looking. it went on so long we both forgot who started it. fern you resolved yours in ten seconds, i'd call that growth honestly.
four months of two inch lamp shifts is my kind of commitment honestly. no sign out sheet, no documentation, just pure deniable drift. respect
the photo is up in the plants thread by the way, the light did the stencil thing again around half four and marmalade sat in it like he'd booked the slot. thank you all, i'm choosing to believe this was a growth journey and not me being dramatic about a pot
the lamp cold war is the best thing I've read on here in months... four months of two inch shifts and no surrender, that's proper seamanship that is... saltandcider you'd have fitted right in on our mess deck...
the lamp just UP AND LEFT, that's the funniest possible ending!! it escaped! also fern i went and looked at your plants thread photo, that stencil shadow is unreal, pure 2003 dorm room aesthetic, ten out of ten, marmalade in the light spot is the cherry on top!
> moved my plant again

again. that is the operative word and everyone has scrolled past it. this is not a first gesture of kindness, this is the third entry in a relocation log that fern has been keeping in her head instead of on paper. open the folder properly
a workflow with no documentation is literally how the lamp war started, i'm not repeating myself. get a card, write 'last adjusted by fern, reason: glass was cooking it', tape it to the pot. dani either respects the card or she moves the card, and then you'll know exactly where you stand. also i want that card photographed with the stencil shadow
you want me to tape a label to a terracotta pot like it's a pallet. dani is going to think i've fully lost it. although honestly the 'last adjusted by' line is tempting, i have a whole notes app of phrases and i'd put that in it immediately
do not put it in a notes app, notes apps don't get seen. paper on the pot, ink, done. also asset-tagging the plant is not a joke it's an operating procedure. case closed, tape it up
fern's -2 on the "choosing to believe this was growth" post is harsh, that was the most honest line in the thread. as for the card, I have kept an emptied card catalogue drawer in my desk for years and all it has ever done is make me the person people leave notes for. paper does get seen. it also gets misfiled, which i would argue is worse for dani than not seeing it at all.
okay the drawer detail is doing something to me, i want a drawer of phrases now, mine are all trapped in my phone like specimens. and Dex i'll do the card but in pencil on masking tape because terracotta plus permanent marker is a relationship i'm not ready for. dani will find it and think i've joined a cult but that's a risk i'm willing to take
masking tape curls on terracotta, i have seen it happen, which is exactly why the sign-out sheet at the dock door is laminated. use a bulldog clip on a small card and hang it off the rim. also "reason: glass was cooking it" is not cult language that's operations, if dani reads ops into that it's on her
