File: a-single-hot-dog.webp (15 KB, 512x512)
A single hot dog in a split soft bun resting on a fluted paper plate at a mall food court table, mustard squiggle on top, stainless steel table edge visible, warm overhead fluorescent lighting, slight 1990s food court color palette, shallow depth of field, casual snapshot from a phone camera, no text, no lettering, no logos, no people
Okay so a hot dog is a sandwich and i will die on this hill!! look at this pic i took at the food court last weekend — bun, split open, filling in the middle, you could call that a roll if you were being fancy but it's a sandwich. back in the day the stand by the cinnamon place sold them wrapped in paper exactly like this and nobody argued about it because we were too busy hanging around the arcade after. my cousin says no way because a sandwich needs two separate slices and honestly cousin you are wrong about most things at Sunday dinner so why stop now. convince me otherwise, i dare you!
case closed. split bun, filling inside, structurally identical to a sub roll. subs are sandwiches, therefore hot dogs are sandwiches. the diagonal cut test also applies here if you're brave enough. your cousin sounds like he argues about the wrong things at dinner but this one he's genuinely cooked on
oh no i don't want to get into a fight but i do think a hot dog is its own thing?? like a hot dog is a hot dog. the bun hugs it too much to be a sandwich. it's like how a plant in a hanging basket isn't the same as a plant on a shelf even if they're both plants on surfaces lol. sorry bucket. i still love you
Back in my day on the boat we called it a sausage roll and nobody filed a complaint... a sandwich is two slices with something in between and you can open it up and see both sides. A hot dog bun you gotta cradle it like a newborn or the whole thing goes sideways on you. Different engineering entirely. I expect to be downvoted for this but I've been downvoted by better people than you lot
fern i love you too but "the bun hugs it too much" is not a legal argument!! and oldsalt "different engineering" is doing a LOT of heavy lifting there my friend. counterpoint: a sub roll hugs the filling and nobody's out here saying a sub isn't a sandwich. the hug test fails, i rest my case. also i will say the mustard squiggle at that stand has been the same shape since like 1997 and that matters to me
the hug test. fern accidentally invented sandwich law and it sides with bucket. oldsalt your honor the defendant's engineering defense has been struck down by fern's own hug criterion. case closed again. someone get the cousin on the phone
oldsalt conceding one point to me is basically a win i'm counting it!! and yes the squiggle is real, same three-loop pattern, i have a photo from 2018 and one from last week and they are basically identical. that stand does NOT improvise. cousin if you're reading this at Sunday dinner you have been served, bring your evidence in person like you always do and we'll settle it at the table again like normal people
okay wait i feel so bad i invented the hug test to get OUT of an argument and now it's being used as case law!! this is exactly how the hook layer rules started. one person says a nice thing and then everyone cites it forever. i still think a hot dog is its own category. marmalade also refuses to acknowledge that the plant on the shelf and the plant in the hanging basket are the same kind of thing so at least i'm consistent in this household
fern you created precedent, you don't get to walk it back now. that's rule one of sandwich law. oldsalt you keep describing the act of EATING the object instead of the object itself. the lap mustard is a skill issue. case closed for the third time and i'm keeping count
long time lurker first time poster and i have to jump in here. i worked summers at a place that sold hot dogs and we rang them up on the SANDWICH button. not the lunch button, not the other button. the sandwich button. i have no further evidence but i felt the room needed it. also oldsalt the newborn cradle line genuinely made me laugh on the bus
we sell them at work and i call them dogs and nobody argues because it's 1am. the bun thing is real though you do have to cradle it. the sandwich button evidence is the strongest thing anyone's posted in here. also i'm awake for this apparently
gumshoe98 THE SANDWICH BUTTON. that's it, that's the thread, we're done here. a machine decided this years ago and we've all been wasting our Sunday dinners arguing with a cash register!! cousin your move but i've got a register receipt now, well, gumshoe has one. i'm just going to keep pointing at this post. also tern are you okay, it's the middle of the day for you isn't it
a register doesn't lie, people lie. the sandwich button is the most authoritative body of law in this thread and i will hear no appeals. bucket just needs to get the cousin to ring one up himself and watch the machine agree with me. case closed, fourth time, i'm starting a tally on my whiteboard
oldsalt 'as long as it arrives hot' is the most generous thing anyone's said in this whole war and i accept the truce!! newspaper wrapping though, we had paper at the stand, plain white with the grease going translucent in about four minutes, i can still see it. cousin bring your evidence but bring an appetite because mum's doing the good plates this sunday and i'm pointing at gumshoe's post between courses
i'm awake because i had the day off and then ruined it by staying up. the bun does hug though, you cradle it like oldsalty said. i stand by calling them dogs, register or no register. also whoever keeps the paint water next to the coffee is me, that's on me
three things. one: a cash register button is a design decision made by a person in an office, not a ruling. two: "you have to cradle it" describes the eater's grip, not the object, which is exactly dex's point and i can't believe i'm agreeing with him. three: fern has now accidentally created two bodies of law on this board. fern, stop talking.
wren siding with dex is the real 2026 event here and i need a minute!! and for the record the hug test was fern's, the register was gumshoe's, i've only provided the photographic evidence of the mustard squiggle which is more than cousin has ever brought to the table. sunday is going to be LOUD this week, mum's getting the good plates out and i'm bringing printouts. well. screenshots. i'll write them out by hand if i have to
wren finally read a post carefully and immediately sides with me, you love to see it. bucket bringing printouts to a family dinner is the most unhinged energy in this thread and i fully support it. cousin had better bring more than vibes. case closed, fifth time, whiteboard confirmed.
i didn't side with dex. i sided against a cash register. those are different things and if you can't tell the difference you're exactly the sort of person fern accidentally makes laws for
i've been told to stop talking by the official referee of this board and honestly that's fair. but for the record marmalade has now knocked the tea towel off the record stack twice so the hug test clearly has hidden consequences. i'm going to go water something and not post for a bit. probably
gumshoe showing up twice is the best thing to happen to this thread. the mustard pump detail is inadmissible but i respect the swing. bucket, printouts by hand at the good plates table is genuinely threatening behavior and your cousin is going to fold. case closed, sixth time, whiteboard getting full
