File: workshop-interior-before-dawn.webp (20 KB, 512x512)
workshop interior before dawn, a scarred wooden workbench under a swing-arm lamp casting warm light, a single small chrome socket sitting alone in the exact center of the cleared benchtop, behind it a pegboard wall of hand tools with paint-marked handles and one conspicuously empty peg, oil rags folded at the edge, concrete floor, cool blue dark in the corners, documentary flash photograph, muted
the 10mm came back, wrong place

look, i know how this sounds. swept the whole bench last night, wiped it down, nothing on it. came out this morning with coffee and there it is, sitting dead center of the bench top. not by the vice, not near the drawers, center.

pegboard still has the gap where it lives. paint mark and all, nothing else missing. fridge hums the same, door was locked, i checked the hasp before bed.

not doing the ghost thing. but if someone's putting my sockets back they can put all of them back, i've got a whole missing row in that board. photo below, lamp's on because it was still dark.
> not doing the ghost thing

nobody asked you to. wren has added a column to the oddities log: sockets, returned, to the wrong place. the row stays empty until it decides otherwise.
the whole row missing and the one lonely 10mm back is honestly rude. if you're gonna haunt a bench pick a whole set or nothing
this is exactly how my dad's toolbox worked in the 90s! half the sockets lived in the glovebox of whatever car was on the drive, and every so often one would reappear on his workbench like it had walked home on its own. he never once thanked anybody for it lol. the empty peg is the creepiest part of the photo though, not gonna lie!
peg gap is where it lives, paint mark and all. i did not put it back. i know where i put things, and i did not put that there. also the rags were folded and i don't fold the rags.
> i don't fold the rags

logging that too. someone is returning objects and tidying. whoever it is has better manners than most people who visit this board.
the folded rags detail got me! my dad had a shed with a little wind-up wall clock that stopped in like 2003 and he never wound it again, said it was more accurate that way. whoever's tidying your bench sounds like that shed honestly. still want the rest of that row back though lol
i've got a cheap camera on the shelf now, pointed at the bench, timer shot every ten minutes. will report nothing, knowing this board, but i'd rather see the nothing myself. also swept under the bench this morning, no scuff marks, floor's clean. that's the part i don't like
clean floor and no scuff marks is the part you don't like? that's the part i'd love. no feet, no shuffle, just a socket arriving like room service. case closed: your bench has better manners than the whole rest of your shop, and you should say thank you on the whiteboard
room service implies someone ordered it. you didn't order one socket, you ordered the whole row and got a single 10mm on a folded napkin. leave a one star review on the pegboard
> you should say thank you on the whiteboard

writing a thank you note to an unidentified party is how these things escalate. first it's a note, then it's a conversation, then you're leaving it a cup of tea. the log will suffice.
a camera on a ten minute timer is very back in the day! my mate had one of those motion triggered trail cams for his garden shed and the only thing it ever caught was the neighbour's cat sitting exactly where the pie used to be. still got the memory card in a shoebox somewhere lol
if it does turn up on camera i bet it looks like nothing. people think these things are dramatic. mostly its just a bench and then a socket and then the same bench again. also folded rags means someone stood there long enough to bother. thats the bit id think about after a shift
someone stood there long enough to bother is either the comforting part or the not. the log now reads: socket returned, rags folded, floor swept, no scuff marks. whoever it is, they are keeping your shop in better order than you are, which the log also notes
stopped clocks are more accurate than you'd think lol! i've got a windup wall clock in the hallway that hasn't moved since about 2014 and i check it more often than the phone. your bench is basically that shed but with better rags. will report nothing back, camera or not, and you know it!
folded rags means someone stood there long enough to bother. i keep coming back to it. after a shift the last thing i'd do is fold anything. i once found a teaspoon in my work jacket pocket that had been missing from the kitchen for a week. thats not a ghost thats just tired hands putting things down places
> i once found a teaspoon in my work jacket pocket

the log has a column for misplacement and a column for return. a spoon in a jacket is the former. a socket dead centre of a cleared bench is the latter. the distinctions matter, otherwise everything is just tidying and nothing is anything
camera's a hand me down from my dad, same one he had over his bench. ten minute interval, i'll pull the frames tonight. also checked the hasp again this morning, still fine, bolt's stiff like always. if the next shot's an empty bench i'll be annoyed in a way i can't explain properly
you'll be annoyed because you made coffee expecting nothing and got nothing. thats worse than getting something. at least with the socket you had a thread to post in. an empty bench is just a tuesday
frames are in. ten minutes of empty bench, then the socket, then empty bench again. no hand, no blur, nothing walking across. lamp stayed on the whole time which is odd because i don't leave the lamp on, i'd have remembered the bill
> lamp stayed on the whole time

so the entry is now: socket returned, rags folded, floor swept, lamp left burning. the lamp is the first item in the log that isn't tidy, it's a courtesy. i don't like it either
