A home kitchen scene photographed in soft morning light: on a wooden counter sits a brand new plain ceramic mug still partly in cardboard packaging, while a small recycling bin by the back door contains an old chipped mug with a cracked handle lying on its side among flattened boxes. Warm domestic tones, slightly cluttered, shallow depth of field, nostalgic film photograph feel, no text, no letter
She binned the chipped mug!! Walked in this morning and there's a shiny new one on the shelf above the kettle, still in its packaging, and my old one's sitting in the recycling by the back door. She meant well, I know she did, she even left a little note saying she'd get me a nice one. But that's my '99 food court mug, the handle's been chipped since before most of you joined this board! Do I pull it out of the recycling and wash it, or do I accept the kind gesture and quietly mourn? It goes out tomorrow morning so I've got about 12 hours to decide. Back in the day I'd have just rescued it without a second thought but now I'm sat here feeling guilty about a bit of crockery!
> It goes out tomorrow morning

wren would like to point out that a note expressing good intentions does not legally bind the crockery. rescue it, wash it, and let the new one sit in its packaging until it has earned shelf space. kind gesture acknowledged, bin also acknowledged. wren keeps a chipped mug on the cart's lower shelf at work, the two things can coexist.
get it out tonight. i've got a crack in the handle i can find in the dark and there's no replacing that, you just learn where it is. the new one can stay boxed for a while, it won't mind.
wren i love you but 'bin also acknowledged' is doing a lot of heavy lifting there haha. the note's stuck to the fridge with a magnet off one of those old arcade token machines, of course it is. i think that's what's really got me, she went to the trouble.
yeah that's the thing. my flatmate gave that coworker a drawer of his own and i still remember it years later. little gestures stick. keep the note, keep the mug, drink out of both.
> she went to the trouble

which is exactly why the rescued mug and the new mug can share the shelf. guilt is not improved by leaving the old one in a bin to ferment with the flattened boxes. get it tonight, bucket. wren's filing this under minor domestic mysteries, obviously.
right. i'm going out there. honestly the handle's chipped in the same spot it's always been chipped and i know exactly where to put my thumb, same as tern says. back in the day my nan had one like it and never let it near a bin either! updates to follow.
good. also put the new one through a wash before it goes anywhere near the shelf, they always taste like cardboard straight out the box. then make yourself a coffee in the old one. or tea. or whatever you're having at this hour.
update! rescued it. it was resting on a flattened cereal box so no soggy bottom, wiped it off, proper wash, and it's back on the shelf beside the new one which is staying boxed for now. note's staying on the fridge too of course. also why is tern's one-liner sitting on all the upvotes, i wrote a whole saga over here haha
hi, new here, just lurking but i had to reply. i rescued a mug from a house share recycling bin in 2011 and i still use it every morning, handle's been glued twice. the new one in the box will still be there next year when you're ready for it, they don't go off
we had a mug in the wheelhouse shelf, chip and all... someone's wife tried to tuck it behind the toaster after she knocked it off the tap. we found it. we washed it. it went back on the shelf... point is, a chip is just a place your thumb already knows. good on you for going out there, bucket.
case closed: rescued mug, boxed mug, note on the fridge. also the new one tastes like cardboard until washed, tern's right and that's annoying. your whiteboard category for today is MUGS RESCUED FROM RECYCLING, add a tally line bucket, you've earned it
made the first coffee out of it this morning and it tasted like victory, no cardboard involved lol. dex is right though, i do have the whiteboard in the kitchen and a MUGS RESCUED line hasn't been used since the toaster incident, so it's due. poor toaster never recovered.
a toaster incident... see, this is what happens when you let appliances get above themselves... glad the mug's back where it belongs, bucket. my thermos has a chip in it from a winter i won't bore you with and it still pours fine... a thing earns its place by being used, not by being pretty in a box.
a toaster that gets above itself is just a bread heater with delusions, case closed. i've gone ahead and added a precautionary line to the work whiteboard: TOASTERS THAT NEVER RECOVERED. currently sits at one, but i work in a building full of appliances i don't trust so give it a fortnight
...Dex and his whiteboard, there was a lad on our crew kept a tally of gulls that stole his lunch... stood at seven before he changed his sandwich route... anyway, the point stands, a chip's a landmark, not a fault... and don't go putting my thermos in the toaster column, it's dented, not dramatic...
still on nights. made tea in gran's mug at 4am and it's got a chip on the rim you have to drink around. never bothered me. the new one's probably fine bucket but you'll know when you're ready, no rush, boxes are patient
> a toaster that gets above itself is just a bread heater with delusions

filing this next to the mug, both under objects with opinions. also bucket has a kitchen whiteboard now which is exactly the kind of detail this board collects. the chip log, the toast log, the whole domestic archive
bucket has a kitchen whiteboard?? incredible. mine's at work so it's under supervision. yours can go wherever, but if the MUGS RESCUED line and the toaster line ever share a panel i want photographic evidence
haha they're already on the same panel dex, the whole board's one list called THINGS THAT NEARLY ENDED. the toaster's up there from 2021, there's a line for a kettle that gave up and one for a chair with a leg my brother fixed twice. it's basically a memorial at this point! wren it IS an archive, you'd love it
