A plump hot dog in a soft white bun on a slightly chipped cream ceramic plate, sitting on a laminate kitchen counter next to a beige corded landline phone, warm overhead kitchen lighting, faint 1990s domestic clutter in the background, slightly grainy snapshot look, no text, no logos, no lettering, no people
Is a hot dog a sandwich, or are we all liars? Look at this beauty I grabbed from the freezer section and microwaved like it's 1999 again, plate sitting right next to my old food court mug (the chipped one, obviously). Back in the day my uncle insisted a hot dog was its own thing, not a sandwich, and we argued about it every single family barbecue until someone brought out the coleslaw and it got forgotten! But now I'm older and I've decided: bun = bread, filling inside = sandwich, case CLOSED. Fight me, respectfully!

A hot dog is a hot dog. You don't call a sausage a sandwich down at the harbour and expect to keep your chips... my uncle Ronnie used to say the same as your uncle, funny enough. The plate's chipped in a familiar way though, that's a proper plate that...
Ronnie solidarity!! And yes, that chip on the plate is doing a LOT of heavy lifting in this photo, it's been with me through three moves. But uncle, a sausage between two halves of a bun IS a sandwich, I'm sorry, the coleslaw argument ends here! ...unless you bring coleslaw.
Coleslaw won't save you this time... my daughter-in-law chipped my good mug the same way that plate's chipped, tried to tuck it behind the toaster like I wouldn't notice. Anyway. It's a sausage in a bun. Call it what you like, I'm going down the headland at half five.
Half five on a Sunday?! respect. I'd come but I'd bring the hot dog and then we'd be back to square one. Okay so follow-up question: is a sausage bap a sandwich too or is that a separate legal category? Because if baps are sandwiches then hot dogs HAVE to be, and my uncle loses posthumously which feels harsh but rules are rules
wait wait wait, I'm siding with oldsalt's daughter in law here because hiding the chipped mug behind the toaster takes COURAGE and she knew exactly what she was doing and honestly? good. marmalade just slow blinked at the photo which I'm taking as agreement with the bun=sandwich theory but she blinks at everything so don't hold me to it
> is a sausage bap a sandwich too or is that a separate legal category

the word you're reaching for is taxonomy. and for the record, bun is not a bap, bap is not a roll, and a roll is not a bridge roll. one of you is arguing about bread architecture while the other is arguing about filing systems. both wrong, differently
Daughter-in-law's been at that mug three years now, she thinks nobody's counted the chips... it's got one more than when I bought it, that's all I'll say. And baps aren't sandwiches either, they're their own thing, same as a hot dog. You don't walk into the canteen on a Monday and ask for a sandwich bap, do you... it's a whole category, this. Heading out now anyway, half five doesn't wait for bun taxonomy.
TAXONOMY. of course Wren shows up with filing system words for a bun argument, this is exactly what my uncle would have hated and also loved. okay new rule: nobody is allowed to be right, we just keep arguing until the coleslaw comes out
ginger just walked across the keyboard so this may be my last post but i stand by hiding chipped mugs behind toasters as a love language. marmalade is currently sitting on the photo of your plate so im taking that as she claims it, sorry bucket
SIX CHIPS. oldsalt out here doing actual long-term surveillance on a mug while we argue bread architecture, this is the most invested anyone has ever been in crockery and i respect it enormously. also flat sea at half five sounds perfect, take the good mug, not the chipped one
worked a grill long enough to know a hot dog is a hot dog. you don't cross contaminate the taxonomy. also that phone cord in the photo looks like it still gets used which is rare
ginger has since left the keyboard so i'm back. oldsalt you counting chips on a mug over three years is the most romantic thing in this thread and i include the coleslaw argument in that
the phone still gets used!! cord reaches about four feet which is exactly enough to pace between the kitchen and the hall bit. back in the day you could hear people doing laps round the house on these things. six chips oldsalt, six. i've started counting my own plate now, this is your fault
> six chips and counting

so we've established the mug has a running total and the plate has a provisional third column. two of you are keeping crockery logs in a thread about bread filing. continue, i'm interested now
crockery logs!! i love this thread, i've read it twice now. marmalade has moved off your plate bucket so the claim is withdrawn, she's back on my cistern pothos like nothing happened. ginger is asleep on the keyboard again so i'm typing one handed
ONE HANDED!! fern you're posting like it's a hostage situation and honestly same energy as my brother counting modem lights out loud. okay so if we're doing logs: plate chips = 2, my nan's white basket = still intact after all these years, and oldsalt's mug = six and climbing like it's got ambitions
> plate chips = 2, nan's white basket = still intact, oldsalt's mug = six and climbing like it's got ambitions

three inventories, one bread argument, zero conclusions. this is the least productive thread i've ever been glad i opened. carry on
long time lurker, made an account just to say i once got told a hot dog is a taco by a bloke at a works do and he wasnt even joking. he had a diagram. on a napkin. i think about it more than i think about most things. anyway the chip on that plate looks like a coastline, bucket
taco guy had a napkin diagram and i still think he's wrong. bun is baked, tortilla isn't. grill rule: know what you're cooking. the coastline comment is accurate though, i've stared at that chip longer than i've stared at most tickets
> the chip on that plate looks like a coastline

so the plate now has a provisional third column, a chip count of two, and a cartographic record. kettleboiler joins the thread with a napkin and immediately out-invests all of you. i am updating my assessment of this thread upward
