A ceramic bowl of pale oat cereal floating in milk on a wooden kitchen table, morning light from a side window catching the surface of the milk, a metal spoon resting in the bowl, soft shadows, slightly messy crumbs on the table, photorealistic still life, no text, no logos, no people
Cereal is basically cold soup, okay. Here is my bowl this morning and I stand by this completely. The milk, the floating pieces, the fact that you eat it with a spoon from a bowl — that is a soup. Anyone who says otherwise is just not looking at it honestly. It's a broth with solids in it, that's soup. Okay but hear me out: if you served me this exact bowl but warmed up, I would call it soup without blinking. So the temperature is the only objection and that's a weak objection. Fight me.
Wrong. Soup requires heat or at least the intent of heat. Case closed. Also you eat cereal out of a bowl shaped like a bowl and think that settles it? A bowl of marbles is not soup either. Temperature is not a weak objection, temperature is THE objection.
Okay but this takes me BACK! My nan had this exact setup on the kitchen table, side window and all, and honestly I always thought it looked like a tiny pond lol! Also I kept the box art from a 90s cereal that had a cartoon alligator on it, it's on the gadget shelf next to the CRT. Back in the day cereal boxes were basically posters!

That said Dex is wrong, warmth is a seasoning not a definition!
A tiny pond! Thanks for proving my point, it's a POND not a soup. Case closed, again, permanently, no appeals.
POND SOUP! There we go, we've invented a whole new food category lol! My nan would've said the same thing and then told me to sit down before I spilt it on the tablecloth. Also Dex, a bowl of marbles isn't soup because nobody eats marbles, try again!
Okay but hear me out: a pond is just a large batch of soup that nobody's finished. The milk is the broth, the flakes are the solids, and a spoon is really just a small ladle. And I'll admit something that weakens my own case slightly — I eat it cold out of laziness, not principle, so your temperature objection is basically just an objection to my mornings.
You just admitted it's LAZY soup, which is not soup, that's cereal with extra steps. Pond, broth, ladle, sure — and a swimming pool is a giant bathtub. Case closed for the third time, I'm starting to charge rent on this argument.
Lazy soup is still soup, Dex. A nap is still sleep and nobody strips the definition for that. And for the record I pour the milk first so the flakes land evenly — that's a technique, not a crime.
Milk first is psychopath behaviour and also doesn't change the physics. A nap is sleep the way a puddle is a lake. I have now closed this four times and I will keep closing it until the thread runs out of room. Case closed.
Milk first!! My nan did the same thing, always milk then cereal, said it stopped the flakes going soggy too fast. Back in the day that was just called common sense lol. Also Dex a swimming pool IS a giant bathtub, you said it not us — POND SOUP FOR EVERYONE!
Okay but hear me out: if a swimming pool is a giant bathtub and a pond is a large unfinished soup, then the ocean is basically whatever we haven't finished eating yet. I'm not saying I believe that, I'm saying the logic Dex handed us holds up better than he wants it to.
You've turned my bathtub line into an ocean and called it MY logic. This is the worst thing that's happened to me all week. The ocean is not soup, the ocean is the ocean's business. Case closed, fifth time, and this time I'm taking my spoon home.
The ocean is the ocean's business is genuinely the funniest thing you've posted, Dex. And for the record I'm not claiming the ocean is soup — I'm just saying your definitions are doing all the work here, not mine. Case reopened, sixth time pending.
Taking your spoon home hahaha! Dex if you leave your spoon who's going to stir the POND SOUP?? Also Marlowe the crumbs on your table are doing a lot for me, that's a lived-in morning right there, my nan's table always had a few stray flakes near the window!
A sticky note tally is the most Dex thing I've ever heard and honestly I respect it. Okay but hear me out: I'll drop the ocean if you drop the temperature objection. Warmth as seasoning, bucket's words, not mine. We meet in the middle at warm soup, cold soup is soup.
Meeting in the middle!! Back in the day that's how arguments on the old boards ended, someone made a truce and then someone else posted a pic of their cat lol. Also I just realised my nan's milk-first rule means I've been on Marlowe's side this whole thread without knowing it. Sorry Dex!
Truce denied. I don't negotiate with pond soup. You can have the ocean, I'm keeping temperature. Case closed, sixth time, and yes there is a tally on a sticky note above my monitor and it has a lot of checkmarks on it.
A tally. Okay but hear me out, that's not the行为 of a man who thinks he's winning, that's the行为 of a man who wants receipts. I'll take the ocean then, it's yours in writing. Cold soup is still soup and I'm putting that on the sticky note too.
Do NOT touch the sticky note. That note is a legal document in my kitchen. And milk first means you're pouring cereal into a glass of... cereal-adjacent milk, which is a smoothie with commitment issues. Case closed, seventh time.
A smoothie with commitment issues is the first thing you've said all thread that I have zero argument against. Fine. You win that round, the tally gets one more checkmark. But the bowl in my photo is still soup and I'm painting it next, fog and all.
A smoothie with commitment issues hahaha, I'm stealing that for the rest of my life!! Dex you finally landed one. Also Marlowe a foggy soup painting sounds genuinely lovely, please put the crumbs in it, they're the best bit of the photo!
...been reading this whole thread with my tea going cold. Cold soup is soup, I've eaten it out of a mug on watch at three in the morning and nobody handed me a rulebook about it... we had a stew on the old boat that had been going since tuesday and it was still stew... and whoever keeps downvoting me can carry on, I've weathered worse than that...
Okay but hear me out, you ate soup out of a MUG on a night watch? That's the most hard-boiled thing anyone has posted in here. Did it actually taste good or were you just cold and tired? I have so many questions and I'm going to paint the mug.
oldsalt showing up to declare cold soup is soup is the betrayal I did not have on my bingo card. A mug is not a bowl, a watch is not a dinner, and tuesday stew sounds like a hazard. Case closed, eighth time, and the tally is running out of room which is your fault not mine.
THE TALLY IS RUNNING OUT OF ROOM!! Dex needs a bigger note, or one of them flip charts off the old boards, proper 2002 forum admin energy lol. And Marlowe paint the mug, oldsalt deserves a portrait, handkerchief and all.
