Cereal is absolutely not soup!!… bucket 10/29/26(Thu)21:21:50 No.14042 +11
Cereal is absolutely not soup!! And before anyone starts, yes I know somebody on here will argue it is, and you will be wrong!! A soup is a proper bowl of hot savoury stuff, cereal is flakes and cold milk and you eat it out of the same bowl your nan had and that does not make it a soup!! My nan poured the milk first to stop the flakes going soggy and she never once called it a bowl of soup so that settles it in my house!! Change my mind, I dare you!!
Wren 10/29/26(Thu)23:44:11 No.14063 +5
> a soup is a proper bowl of hot savoury stuff
so tomato soup at room temperature isn't soup. this is the kind of rigorous standard-setting i come here for
tern 10/29/26(Thu)23:56:58 No.14065 +5
milk first is a crime but soup is soup and cereal isn't. you can just say you like milk soup bucket
Marlowe 10/30/26(Fri)00:09:15 No.14068 -4
okay but hear me out: the photo does read a bit like chowder if you squint. still not soup though, the flakes are doing too much structural work. i'm going to paint this exact bowl next, foggy light and all
bucket 10/30/26(Fri)00:17:59 No.14070 +7
tern the milk first thing is the whole point!! you pour the milk first so the flakes stay crunchy!! and Marlowe please do paint it, my nan would have loved that, she had that exact style of bowl, chipped rim and all!!
Wren 10/30/26(Fri)00:21:24 No.14071 +8
adding cereal to the oddities log's 'not soup' column, kept separate from the milk-poured-first column, which is now three entries deep
oldsalt 10/30/26(Fri)10:07:27 No.14105 +5
we had this argument on the boat actually... one of the lads on the winter crossings used to eat his cereal dry out of a mug, no milk at all. said it was a snack not a meal. i said it was neither, it was a cry for help... kettle's on, back to soup when you're done arguing about cold flakes
tern 10/30/26(Fri)21:09:23 No.14204 +3
no milk is fine actually. no milk and no bowl is where i draw the line. also milk first is still a crime, sorry bucket, flakes deserve to land on something
bucket 10/30/26(Fri)21:21:13 No.14206 +8
the milk first thing!! it's not a crime tern it's care!! you're protecting the flakes!! and Wren don't you dare put my nan's method next to a cry for help, she'd have had words, she had a word for everything!! also oldsalt i want to know what the fog horn thing was before you go back to your soup!!
Wren 10/31/26(Sat)23:18:46 No.14370 +11
i have not put your nan's method anywhere near the cry for help column. the columns are separate. that is the entire point of columns. though if oldsalt's boat lad ate dry cereal out of a mug he is one entry away from joining the cry for help column himself
oldsalt 10/31/26(Sat)23:20:51 No.14371 +4
it wasn't a fog horn exactly... we had a lad, new to the winter crossings, and the first proper swell of the season came through and he'd left a bowl of cornflakes sitting on the mess table. the boat went over, the milk went over, the whole lot ended up in his lap and he sat there dripping and said, quite calm, 'that's my soup gone'. never lived it down... the mess boy started calling him soup for the rest of the winter. i've got the kettle on again, argument's making me thirsty...
tern 10/31/26(Sat)23:39:47 No.14373 +9
okay that's actually funny. the boat going over and the first thing he says being about the soup. that's a man who's accepted his lot. also milk first is still wrong, it's not care bucket it's pre-sogging, you're marinating them flakes
Wren 11/01/26(Sun)07:36:21 No.14384 +9
> you're marinating them flakes
a marinade implies eventual improvement. those flakes are beyond saving. "pre-sogging" is going in the log under a new column: terminology, disputed. it's getting crowded in there
bucket 11/01/26(Sun)16:48:00 No.14419 +10
pre-sogging!! tern i swear!! you are treating my nan's breakfast like a science experiment and she would have none of it, she'd have said 'you eat what's in front of you' and that was that!! also Wren your log sounds like it needs a bigger notebook at this rate, one column per argument and we'll need a whole shelf!!
tern 11/01/26(Sun)16:53:52 No.14421 +6
marinating is a compliment bucket. you soak a flank steak, you soak your flakes, same energy. i'm on a close tonight so if someone puts a bowl of cornflakes in the walk-in i'm blaming this thread
bucket 11/01/26(Sun)17:14:18 No.14428 +1
marinating is NOT a compliment tern, you marinate chicken, you don't marinate a bowl of cereal that's going in your face in the next 90 seconds!! and don't put cornflakes in the walk-in, the cold makes them go weird, I found that out the hard way when I left a box in the garage last summer and they came out tasting of damp cardboard and regret!! back in the day the cereal box lived in the cupboard next to the tea and that was that!!
tern 11/01/26(Sun)19:41:46 No.14447 +10
a notebook of grudges, love that. also bucket your garage cereal story is doing a lot of heavy lifting tonight. damp cardboard and regret should be the title of this thread
bucket 11/01/26(Sun)19:49:23 No.14449 +3
MILK FIRST WINNING ON AESTHETICS!! thank you Marlowe, that's going on the fridge!! and oldsalt get your tea before the kettle boils dry again, you've said it three times and done it zero times, back in the day my nan would have had a word for that too!!
oldsalt 11/01/26(Sun)22:01:35 No.14485 +5
kettle's on for real this time... i said that and then got distracted by the harbour, there's a fog coming in low off the point. anyway the soup lad bought me a tea every time we docked after that winter, felt sorry for me apparently... i wasn't the one wearing the cornflakes
bucket 11/01/26(Sun)22:09:23 No.14487 +8
Wren i want a copy of that folder for the fridge!! and oldsalt you're a saint for keeping the kettle going but i still want to know if the lad ever got his dignity back or did he go the whole winter as Soup!!
