A plain white mug filled with thick warm yellow custard, steam rising, sitting on a grey office desk beside a stack of paperwork and a small tin, dim early morning warehouse office lighting from a high window, realistic phone snapshot, slightly grainy
Custard is basically a drink. Warm, liquid-ish, you can sip it, it comes in a jug, people have it on its own in a mug. Name one thing that separates it from soup. You can't. Case closed before you even type.

Pictured: exhibit A, on my desk at 6:15 this morning. Yes that is a mug. Yes it is custard. No I will not be elaborating further.
> Name one thing that separates it from soup. You can't.

viscosity. set-ability. the fact that it contains eggs and sugar and nothing else has ever been in a jug next to a roast. a jug is not an argument, dex, a jug is just a jug with delusions
i am so upset by this picture. it's 6:15, it's dark, there's paperwork underneath it and you just... drank custard at your desk like a man who has never been loved. the little tin is what's getting me. did you make it AT the warehouse
we had a lad on the winter crossings, dry cereal out of a mug with no milk, called it a snack rather than a meal... and the whole wheelhouse thought he was cracked... now I see this and I reckon the lad was onto something... warm custard in a mug on a cold deck would've seen us through many a 4am crossing... case not closed I'm afraid lad
fern the tin is powder. the warehouse has a kettle. I am not an animal.

wren says viscosity like that helps her. soup is thick. chowder exists. you're just mad the jug argument is unanswerable. it comes in a JUG. gravy doesn't come in a jug. tea doesn't come in a jug. custard does. case closed
gravy comes in a jug. you have just argued gravy is a drink. i want that on the record, i want it on the record permanently. fern are you getting this for the log
gravy in a jug is gravy being held hostage. i said custard comes in a jug AS ITS NATURAL FORM. you put gravy in a jug and everyone asks why. nobody asks why custard is in a jug. different vibe entirely. wren has actually helped my argument by proving she'll count any liquid in any container. sticky note tally going up, one sec
okay but hear me out, did you make the custard and then let it cool a bit before the photo, because the steam says otherwise. also i want to know what the small tin looked like. was it one of those ones with the faded picture of a pudding on the lid. i feel like it was one of those
6:15 custard at a desk is just a 2am cornflakes bowl wearing a tie. i respect it. the tin is the tell though, anyone keeping powder at work has done this more than twice
the tin is a pudding tin style thing yes with a picture on the lid thats faded so you basically guessed it marlowe which is annoying. anyway gravy in a jug is gravy's problem not mine. custard was BORN in the jug. next
okay so it IS the faded pudding tin, i knew it. those lids are lovely, half the colour worn off from hands. i've got one with what used to be a crumble on it, it lives on my kitchen table holding drawing pins. also dex you did not answer the cooling question, the steam pattern says that mug was poured hot and photographed within about a minute
i accept cereal in a mug as a drink actually. freely. thats consistent with everything ive ever said. soup in a mug is soup, custard in a mug is a drink, you are scrambling
hang on. if soup in a mug is still soup and custard in a mug is a drink then the mug isn't doing anything for you dex, you're back to the substance itself, which is what wren said at the start. i think you've argued yourself into a corner and the custard has gone cold
the mug is the exhibit not the argument. soup was always a drink, i have said cereal is a drink for years, thats not a corner thats just consistency. you found the same door twice and think its a trap. custard is a drink. case closed again
if you let it sit two minutes it goes back to being a pudding though. you shot it before the skin formed. thats the real tell, not the tin. still respect it
tern no, dont give him the skin detail, he'll start timing it on saturdays. i'm still on the paperwork. a hot mug sat on paperwork dex. if that had gone over you'd have lost the load schedule and the custard both and i'd have had no proof you were loved
> you found the same door twice and think its a trap

that is genuinely the nicest sentence you've ever typed and it is still load-bearing nonsense. soup is soup. soup in a mug is soup. soup in a hat is soup. the vessel has never once been the issue and you keep volunteering it like a witness who convicts himself. i am putting the gravy-in-a-jug quote on the fridge permanently, as requested, in case you try to unsay it at the winter social.
i've been thinking about the tin all morning so i went and looked in my own cupboards and i don't own a single pudding tin. not one. which feels like a lack in me now.

also marmalade has been sat on the kitchen counter watching me open the biscuit cupboard like he knew i'd be searching for something. he does this when he senses a task. ginger knocked a pen off the table twice just to keep the energy up
fern not owning a single pudding tin is the most alarming thing in this thread and i've read wren try to argue with a jug. go to a car boot. fix yourself. also the mug was on the paperwork ON PURPOSE, the paperwork is flat, the mug is stable, case closed again
a car boot, he says, like i'd trust a stranger's tin over the ghost of a pudding i never had. i'm not replacing the tin dex, i'm sitting with the lack. marmalade is still on the counter, he has not moved since i typed that, ginger has now got the pen under the sofa and is pretending it's gone. the load schedule survives another day though, so one of us is winning
nan tins are heirloom not procurement, thats a different category and you know it. fern is choosing emptiness and calling it philosophy. the mug is stable, the paperwork is flat, the custard was a drink at 6:15 and a pudding by 6:20 and both are true. case closed at both times
> both are true

you cannot close a case at two different times with two different verdicts and call that consistency. that isn't a verdict, that's a weather report. also fern, sitting with the lack is your business but ginger has the pen under the sofa and that's now the only unresolved matter in this thread
a weather report, honestly. okay but hear me out, if the custard is a drink at 6:15 and a pudding by 6:20 then by 6:25 it's a dessert and by 6:30 it's a regret. dex you haven't answered the steam question once, i counted. also fern ginger getting the pen under the sofa and pretending it's gone is the most relatable thing anyone's typed all week
the steam question is a trap question about timing and timing doesn't change substance. pudding tin is from my nan, it's on the shelf above the kettle, faded picture of a trifle, i'll photograph it with the compass next time for scale. case closed with provenance now
