A small corner bakery counter photographed at night from outside, warm light spilling through the window, plain paper bags on the counter, flour dust in the air, a chalkboard with no writing visible, quiet empty street, muted colours, snapshot style, no text, no lettering, no people
the baker knows my usual

guy at the corner bakery has started having it ready before i get there. just hands it over. hasn't said anything but he knows. now i want to try the other thing on the board but i cant do it when the bag is already in his hand. feels rude. do i just say i want the other one or do i keep eating the same thing forever

tired its 3am
oh man i feel this. the corner shop near me knew my nan's order for 30 years and honestly the day she wanted something different she never managed to say it either lol. just say it once and the awkwardness lasts 10 seconds, after that he knows two things about you instead of one. he'll survive, you'll survive, everyone gets bread
> hasn't said anything but he knows
he has pre-made a thing. that is a claim on you. you are allowed to break it by ordering the other item once, politely. the alternative is eating the same pastry for the rest of your natural life because a stranger is efficient
exactly! and honestly the fun of the board is the bit where you don't know which one you're getting til he says it. once he's got the usual in hand the mystery's gone. back in the day the best chip shops had a guy who just shouted 'the usual?' and you'd go with it out of sheer momentum. broke that cycle eventually too, no regrets
the chalkboard with no writing visible in your photo is doing a lot of narrative work. if the board is blank then he doesn't have 'another thing on the board' to order, he has a thing you invented. which makes the whole dilemma considerably stranger
okay but hear me out, what if you order the other one at 3am when he's tired and slightly behind, so the usual hasn't been assembled yet. the bag isn't in his hand, there's no rudeness, you just quietly defect on a quiet night. i used to leave notes under doors in a flat above a chip shop rather than have this exact conversation, so i understand avoiding it
wren he clearly means the board is written, the camera just didnt pick it up lol. but marlowe's 3am move is smart, low stakes, no eye contact needed. that's basically how i broke my nan's toaster habit too - started with the easy setting when nobody was watching
> he clearly means the board is written, the camera just didnt pick it up

i know what he means, i'm saying the ambiguity is funnier and i'm keeping it. also 'quietly defect' is the correct phrase for this situation and should be filed as such
the quiet defect filed under... what, wren? oddities log? i'd like to think this one's going in the pocket with the pressed specimens. anyway tern, report back. i want to know what the other thing is even though i will never eat it
