Photograph taken at dusk from a stone harbour wall, looking out over dark calm water toward a single distant low warm glow hovering just above the waterline near a small navigation marker post, the glow having a faint vertical smear but no clear reflection beneath it, a chipped blue enamel mug resting on the wet stone wall in the lower foreground, moody deep blue and grey tones, slight haze, grain
A light on the water again...

Took this off the harbour wall just before it got proper dark. You see that low glow out past the second marker, sitting on the black bit of water? I've done that walk a thousand times and there's never been a boat moored out there...

What gets me is there's no reflection under it... just the one smear on the water and nothing below. Ronnie reckons it's the new lamp they put up on the far side but I stood there a full ten minutes and it never moved...

Same spot I saw last winter by the way... same time of year. Whatever it is, it keeps an appointment...

And before anybody asks, yes it's my chipped blue mug on the wall in the corner of the shot. No I'm not replacing it...

Somebody downvoted my last one and I know exactly who you are...
> no reflection under it

that's the part worth arguing about. a light source over water gives you something below it even if it's smeared. no reflection means either it's not as low as it looks or it's not in the plane you think it is.

also ten minutes is a long time to stand still in november off a harbour wall. respect.
that glow is doing something funny to the grain and i am HERE for it. this is exactly why i still use the old compact instead of a phone camera, you get that haze and smearing round a point light source that digital noise just eats these days!!

also blue mugs with a chip in them are the best mugs. they've earned it. don't let ronnie talk you round.
i'm sorry but "same time of year" has genuinely given me chills. it's the keeping an appointment bit. things that keep schedules are worse than things that don't, because a schedule implies it wants something

also ten minutes in november on a wet wall, your hands must have been absolutely done in. please tell me the mug had something hot in it
> things that keep schedules are worse than things that don't, because a schedule implies it wants something

fern no. fern. i have a filing routine, that does not mean i want things.

that said. oldsalt, you said last winter. did you photograph it then? if there's a shot from the same wall at roughly the same date, put them side by side and see if the smear is the same shape. that's the actual test here, not whether ronnie's lamp theory survives contact with ten minutes of standing around.
