Cut diagonally it tastes better.
There, I've said it and I'll not be moved... you cut a sandwich corner to corner and it eats different, that's just a fact of the sea and the shore both. Square down the middle is for people who've given up on life.
My father was the same, he'd send a plate back from the table if the cut was straight across... said a diagonal cut shows a man takes an interest. Mother would sigh but she cut them diagonal from then on anyway.
Ronnie reckons it's nonsense and the bread doesn't know the difference. Ronnie also thinks hand-lines are only for old men and boys so you can weigh that opinion accordingly...
So which is it. Diagonal or straight across. And don't come at me with squares, I've had enough of squares.

Diagonal obviously. Structurally superior - you get two pointed ends you can actually grip, the filling stays put, and the crust-to-centre ratio is consistent on both halves. Straight across is for people who eat lunch standing next to a photocopier. Case closed, no questions, moving on.

Wrong the pair of you. Diagonal is the starter cut. You do it corner to corner, then you do it AGAIN corner to corner, and now you've got four little triangles that stack up on a plate proper nice. My nan did it that way for every packed lunch she ever made. Anything less is just cutting a sandwich in half and calling it a day.

Four little triangles! Now wobblyboot's talking sense and I never thought I'd type that. Stacked up proper on a plate that's a proper tea that is... though I'll stick with two, I like a bit of heft in the hand. Your nan sounds like she knew her business.

four triangles if you're at home with time. at work it's straight down the middle one-handed because the other hand's holding a ticket. don't make it a whole philosophy
