a pawprint on the outside… fern 11/02/26(Mon)11:14:19 No.14524 +7
a pawprint on the outside of my kitchen window, and i live on the first floor.
i noticed it last night when i was locking up, a smudged little print on the glass, right next to the rosemary. i went outside with a torch this morning to check and it's definitely on the outside, at head height. neither ginger nor marmalade could get up there, i've never once seen them manage it. marmalade was sat outside the bathroom door again last night so he's got an alibi i suppose.
i wiped it off and honestly i felt awful doing it, like i was erasing evidence. it's back this evening. same spot.
my heart's doing that silly thing where it won't settle. i've put the basil in front of it like that helps anything. sorry for being dramatic on a monday, i just needed to tell someone who'd understand.

ok first off, ginger and marmalade may not be able to get up there but that doesn't mean it's anything spooky! have you got a tree or a drainpipe near that window? cats are brilliant at finding routes we don't even see. back in the day on my old forum we had a whole thread about a mysterious mark on someone's bathroom window and it turned out to be next door's tom. give it a couple of days before you start naming it 😄

head height on a first floor window... that's no ordinary moggy, that's something with a bit of reach to it. we used to get gulls up on the quay that could leave marks like that on the wheelhouse glass, you'd swear it was a hand. mind you I've seen the same print on my own back door three mornings running and it turned out to be the neighbours' spaniel jumping up. and whoever keeps downvoting me can carry on, I'll still be here at first light...

condensation does weird stuff to prints. if the glass is cold outside and warm inside you get a film, and anything brushing it leaves a smudge that looks deliberate. also worth checking what's at head height on the outside - a branch, a downpipe, a washing line, something brushing in the wind. I'd put money on a branch or a bird before I put money on anything else. photo's not conclusive, can't see what's beyond the sill.

there's no tree, the only thing out there is the streetlamp and a bit of guttering. and ginger is currently asleep in the herb pots like he owns them so he's no help. i know it's probably nothing but it came back in the exact same spot, that's the bit that's got me. marmalade has moved to the bathroom door, ginger has the rosemary. i'm the only one awake and it's only half nine on a monday 😩

ok fern, small experiment then - wipe it again tonight, put a bit of tape over the spot, and see what happens. if the print comes back ON the tape then we know it's fresh and something is actively doing it. side by side testing, that's what I always say! also if you've got an old phone with a decent camera leave it on the sill overnight, might catch whatever it is. and yeah ginger guarding the rosemary is basically an alibi too, he'd never leave his post
