Photo taken from low angle inside a cluttered home garage at night, looking up at a dusty white ceiling above a wooden workbench lit by a single bare hanging bulb. A distinct clean streak disturbs the grey dust layer across the ceiling, contrasting with the surrounding grime. Below, a metal step ladder, hand tools, a magnetic parts tray and a dented metal kettle sit on the bench. Shallow depth of
Mark on my garage ceiling.

Took this tonight under the bare light. There's a clean line in the dust up there, above the bench, roughly the length of the step ladder. Problem is the ladder's tallest rung gets me nowhere near the ceiling. I don't own anything that reaches. No pole, no broom that high, nothing.

Wife says it's a shadow thing from the heater glow. Maybe. But shadows don't move dust.

Go ahead and pick it apart, I dare you.
dust line the exact length of your ladder and you say the ladder can't reach? that's not a mystery, that's your ladder standing there at some point while something rubbed the ceiling. case closed, ladder did it
forget the ladder for a sec, what's hanging from the bulb? if there's a pull cord or a hook up there it'd swing every time the door opens and sweep the same arc. my garage has a clean stripe like that from the light pull, took me a year to notice

correct, but heat does. convection off that space heater pushes air up toward the ceiling in a pretty predictable plume. dust moves. that's your answer until proven otherwise
convection's a fair shout, Wren. heater's under the bench end so the plume would sit right about there. but it'd be a soft-edged patch, not a line with corners. something physical touched that ceiling. still thinking about Dex's ladder theory, it's wrong but it's wrong in an interesting way
