A dim spare bedroom interior, a leafy calathea houseplant on a small wooden side table, every leaf angled toward a plain blank wall away from the window, soft grey morning light from a curtained window, an empty armchair in the corner, quiet eerie still atmosphere, realistic photograph
all the leaves face the wall

ok so i went into the spare room this morning to say good morning to the calathea (yes i talk to it, ginger hides under the bed every time, marmalade judges me from the armchair) and every single leaf has turned to face the blank wall. not the window. the wall. i moved her in here months ago because i'd written her off and now she's staring at the plaster like she's waiting for somebody, which is exactly what my mum says about her chipped enamel mug and now i'm feeling really weird about it. i haven't touched her, i haven't moved the table, nothing else in that room has changed. i just stood there with my tea going cold. has a plant ever just... looked at something that isn't there?
